Abstract: Quantum computers promise the ability to do calculations that are simply too big for current computing hardware. However, achieving this promise requires larger quantum computers with less noise than current hardware. While understanding sources of noise in quantum processors is an active area of study, we can already apply what is known to engineer quantum processors with reduced noise sensitivity and improved performance. I’ll illustrate this with two examples from my own research: using additive manufacturing to make novel ion traps for quantum computing and using photonics for better (superconducting) qubit control.
