Title: Building the Quantum Future at IBM: Applications Today and Opportunities for Tomorrow
Abstract: Advances in quantum hardware and error correction are expanding the range of problems quantum computers can explore. This talk will focus on quantum applications at IBM: how researchers identify promising problems, develop and evaluate quantum approaches alongside classical methods, and build on demonstrations of quantum utility. Following a brief look at my career journey, I will discuss the growing ecosystem for learning about and contributing to quantum applications. I will also share IBM’s educational resources, introduce a new quantum applications course, and highlight internship opportunities for students interested in the field.
Bio: Katie McCormick is a quantum educator and content developer at IBM Quantum. She earned bachelor’s degrees in astrophysics and mathematics from UC Santa Cruz and a PhD in physics from the University of Colorado Boulder, where she conducted quantum information experiments with trapped ions. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in ultracold atomic physics at the University of Washington, she transitioned to science journalism, writing for Quanta Magazine, Physics Magazine, Knowable Magazine, Discover Magazine, and other publications. Today, she draws on her experience in quantum research, education, and science communication to create courses, tutorials, and videos for IBM Quantum.
